Zusammenfassung

This paper gives a practical approach to computer-aided mathematical modelling and problem solving in mathematics education and instruction. It consists of three parts. In part 1, some basic concepts relevant to the topic will be clarified and, in particular, mathematical modelling will be defined in a comprehensive sense. Furthermore it will describe the role of modelling in present mathematics curricula and its possibilities in everyday teaching practice. Part 2 consists of several teaching sequences, selected materials and resources for teaching mathematical modelling using a computer. The examples will demonstrate the power of the spread-sheet concept in various applications, i.e. financial questions, linear and non-linear functions, statistical methods. All sequences give a detailed description of activities and have been tested for several times. Part 3 presents some empirical results including a detailed analysis of individual interviews with pupils that show in general the positive effects of computer-aided instruction in modelling real world problems.
